Art Yarn by Design - JAN 16-17 2010
The knitty-gritty of well-designed Art Yarn. This workshop is suitable for handspinners interested in learning to spin high-quality Art Yarn for use in a project.
Wish to learn how to create beautifully composed Art Yarns from start to finish?
You will learn valuable skills in planning your handspun yarn from start to finish, fibre selection & preparation, and project ideas for Art Yarn.
Learn the steps involved in spinning an Art Yarn:
- How to Compose an Art yarn, Choosing a theme : the overall 'look & feel' of your yarn
- Fibre & Technique selection
- How to prepare and blend fibre & materials to achieve colour & texture
- sequence & design
- Technique Toolbox: Learn to Spin a variety of fun Art Yarn *techniques
- All of the above is approached with YOUR desired finished project in mind
We consider the drape, weight, texture & colour of the item you wish to create using your Art yarn, eg.cowl, hat, summer scarf, bag, bowl, which is influenced by the skill you use to create your piece, ie. knit, crochet, weave, freeform.
*Possible technique toolbox items: Coils: Seashells & Beehives, Corespun & Wrapped yarns, Add-in's & Spliced objects, Nubs & Crescents, and even Combination soup: multple techniques in one yarn!

skillz: Ability to spin confidently with your wheel. Jumbo or delta flyers are helpful but not essential.. we are flexible! It is advised you have a basic knowledge of spinning, and a zest for modern yarn making. We will share creative ideas and make a variety of fun handspun yarns.

Rainbow Fibre Workshop
Held in fibre art studio, Lawson, Blue Mountains
Session 1: 9am - 12.30pm
Learn how to dye unspun fibre with minimal water waste & achieve an exhausted dye bath. Using eco-friendly Greener Shades Dyes, we will learn two different methods to dye luscious combed wool top. $45 *plus materials.
Rainbow Yarn Workshop
Held in fibre art studio, Lawson, Blue Mountains
Session 2: 1.30 - 5.00pm
Learn how to dye skeins of yarn with the spectrum of Greener Shades dyes. Looking at basic colour theory, we will learn how to paint skeins in pleasing colourways using microwave, steam & kettle dye methods. Only$45 *plus materials.
*Undyed yarn & fibre will be available for purchase on the day, or prior on this website at a reduced price for Workshop attendees.

Spin Tips - ideas & info on how to use our spinning batts:

Ebb & flo(tm) is one of my favourite styles of yarn to make, and this can generally be created using all of our batt styles. If thick & thin tickles your fancy, it's fun to experiment with different degrees of extremity..
Pinata Treasure Batts & Maxi Batts can create extreme bumps of texture when spinning with a thin binder [pic.1]
Landscape Batts create ripples using a thin binder, making a bubbly thick & thin [pic.2]
Smoothie Batts make a wafty wavy singles with gentle undulations. These are our most finely carded batts, very easy to draft into a consistent roving [pic.3]
